At the heart of this exploration is a desire to create a dialogue centered around Black identity and how it is explored in the global south, but specifically in Cape Town, South Africa. Why is that so many Black Africans find the ‘Mother City’s’ embrace suffocating instead of welcoming? In South Africa where ‘Black’ has distinct borders, who is considered Black and who is not? Paramount in my work and research is how social class plays a significant role in defining how one witnesses ‘Blackness’. Is the Black middle class in South Africa at the precipice of change or holding people back?
